Grand Trip on Valentine's Day - Zona Images

14 February 2014

Wake-up call to leave home in Phoenix and head north for a day trip to the Grand Canyon came early on this holiday weekend. We had family visiting from Memphis and a ride on the Grand Canyon Railroad was exactly what doctor ordered to wash away those Memphis blues. The train departs daily from Williams, AZ at 9:30 AM and travels 65 miles north to the south rim of the Grand Canyon. At 11:45 we disembarked and made our way to the edge.

Stand to the Side

Standing on the brink of time we peered down into millions of years of history. Even though I have been to the canyon numerous times and backpacked to the river on several occasions the view is always incredible regardless of your vantage point. We made our way west from El Tovar for a short hike down Bright Angel Trail to the first tunnel then back up and further west for a picnic lunch on the rim with the canyon at our toes.

By three o'clock it was time to head back to the depot and catch the next (and only) train south. The scenery along the way was a stark contrast to what we had just witnessed  but I think there was a fresh shade of the blues left behind adding a little more to God's palette.
